LEXINGTON, Va.--Sophomore Ryan Junghans buried a school-record
eight three-pointers and finished with a career-best 38 points to
pace the Hood College men's basketball team to a 92-82 victory over
the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Mariners Saturday in the
consolation game of the Washington & Lee Tournament at the
Warner Center.
The Blazers avoided their first back-to-back losses of the
season and up their record to 8-3 overall. The Mariners dip to 5-4.
After the Mariners drew first blood on a three-pointer by Pat
Grace, Hood reeled off the next 13 consecutive points and would not
relinquish their lead the rest of the way. Junghans gave the
Blazers their biggest lead of the stanza, 30-18, with a trey at the
8:11 mark. Hood took a 38-33 edge into the half.
The Blazers used another spurt at the start of the second half
to regain a double-figure advantage. Clinging to a 50-46 lead at
the 16:30 mark, the Blazers scored 10 unanswered points over a span
of 2:41 to go up by 14. King's Point drew to within seven with just
under two minutes to play but connected on just one of its final
eight field goal attempts down the stretch.
All nine Blazers to see time on the court scored at least three
points. Junghans, who was named to an all-tournament team for the
second time this season, eclipsed the previous school record of
seven triples set by Dennis Tressler against John Jay College Nov.
26, 2005.
Sophomore Anthony Bennett matched his career-high with 17 points
on 6-of-15 shooting. Junior Jesse Gutekunst, who played limited
minutes due to foul trouble, finished with eight points, nine
rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Jeff Willison hit 3-of-4
shots for six points off the bench while senior Sean Robine grabbed
a season-high 11 rebounds. Senior Darnell Edmonds had a solid
all-around effort with eight points, eight rebounds and a
season-high 10 assists.
The Blazers surpassed the 90-point plateau for the second time
this season and picked up 20 assists on 31 buckets.
Hood returns to Frederick Saturday for the first of five
straight home games at Thomas Johnson High School. The Blazers
square off against Messiah College Jan. 6 at 2 p.m.
