Men's Basketball Falls Short Against Nationally Ranked York

FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball fell short in its upset bid of nationally ranked York College, dropping a 93-83 decision to the No. 9 Spartans Monday night at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.

The Blazers had their school-record tying five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 12-11 on the season.

The Spartans, who advanced to last year's NCAA Division III Final Four, won their sixth straight and improved to 19-2.

Hood hung tough against the veteran Spartans and trailed just 73-72 with 5:49 remaining. However, Kenny Fass and Chad McGowan nailed back-to-back 3-pointer to push York ahead by seven and the Spartans hit 10-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Hood led through most of the first half behind 16-of-31 shooting from the field, including a 5-of-12 effort from 3-point range, but York closed out the half with a 9-2 run to forge a 39-39 deadlock at the break.

The Spartans then outscored the Blazers 18-6 over the first five minutes of the second half to open a 57-45 lead before Hood slowly clawed its way back to within one, 68-67, on a 3-pointer by junior Darnell Edmonds with just over eight minutes left.

Brian Singer hit a jumper and Joe Yeck followed with a 3-pointer to keep the Blazers at bay.

Provenzano finished with a team-high 20 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Jesse Gutekunst added 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Edmonds tied his career high with five 3-pointers and finished with a season-high 16 points to go along with seven assists and three steals. Freshman Tim Abercrombie added 15 points and four assists.

McGowan led York with 22 points and nine rebounds. Bushey finished with 20 points, while Kyle Zerfing added 15.

Hood returns to action Thursday when it hosts Patrick Henry at 7 p.m.
