MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--The Hood College softball team dropped a
pair of games on its third day in Myrtle Beach Wednesday, falling
to Utica 14-0 and Arcadia 4-2.
In their opener, the Blazers (4-6) fell behind 5-0 after the
first inning and could not get on track. Utica added three runs in
the third and tacked on six more in the fifth to end the game early
due to the eight-run rule.
Andrea Curley, who held the Blazers to just one run on four hits
in an 8-1 win Monday, gave up five hits and struck out three to
earn the shutout victory. She also helped her own cause at the
plate, going 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, a walk, three RBIs and
two runs scored.
Blazer senior Lisa Green (0-3) allowed nine hits and six earned
runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Junior Tamara Maggard went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the
Hood offense.
Hood looked to rebound in its second game of the day, jumping
out to a 2-0 lead in the second.
However, Arcadia rallied for the win with single runs in the
second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Sophomore Jen Guyer doubled to start the second and scored on a
ground out by freshman Mandi Lambert. Fellow freshman Jamie Gardner
added a RBI-single later in the inning.
Arcadia cut Hood's lead in half in the bottom of the second and
pulled even in the fourth on Jenn Compton's RBI-double.
The Knights then took the lead for good in the fifth on a
fielder's choice and closed out the scoring with an unearned run in
the sixth.
Kristin Law set the Blazers down in order in the sixth and
seventh innings to close out her complete-game win. She allowed
five hits and two runs while striking out five.
Gardner (1-1) took the loss for Hood after giving up three
earned runs on eight hits in a complete-game effort.
Guyer went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, while
freshman Sara Wastler was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen
base.
The Blazers close out their Spring Break trip Thursday as they
face Oswego State at 9:30 a.m. and Alvernia at 11:30 a.m.
