FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College ran its winning streak to a
season-high six games with a sweep of visiting Wilson in an
Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference doubleheader Thursday
afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.
The Blazers posted an easy 7-0 win in the opener before pulling
out an exciting 3-2 eight-inning victory in the nightcap.
After dominating the first game, Hood (13-9, 6-0 AWCC) found
itself in a close battle in the second contest.
The Blazers took an early 1-0 lead when Sara Wastler led off the
first with a double and promptly scored on a single by Tamara
Maggard.
Hood added another run in the third as Wastler singled to start
the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and
scored on another wild pitch.
After Wilson (5-9, 2-5) pulled even with two runs in the fourth,
Hood appeared to take a 4-2 lead on a two-out, bases-loaded single
by Jamie Bussey. However, a questionable runner interference call
negated the runs and ended the inning.
Hood threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Janelle Moss
drew a two-out walk and stole second, but Wastler flied out to deep
left to end the inning.
Both teams went down in order in the seventh, sending the game
into the international tiebreaker with each squad starting the
extra frame with a runner at second base.
Wilson looked to strike first and used an infield single and an
error to load the bases with one out. However, Blazer starter Kara
Robert induced a fly out and ground out to end the inning.
Hood wasted little time in plating the winning run in the home
half of the eighth. With Robert placed at second to start the
inning, Jess Krietz looked to move her over with a sacrifice bunt.
However, the throw to first glanced off the second baseman's
glove and rolled deep into foul territory in right field, allowing
Robert to race home with the winning run.
Robert (3-3) earned the complete-game victory after allowing
just five hits and one earned run in eight innings. She struck out
five and walked two.
Cheryl Taylor took the tough loss for Wilson, giving up four
hits and one earned run. She fanned two and walked four.
Wastler, who went 4-for-4 in the opener, collected two hits in
her first two at-bats of the nightcap to give her a hit in an
impressive 11 consecutive official at-bats dating back to Sunday's
doubleheader at Wells. The streak ended with an infield fly out in
the fourth inning.
In her last five games, Wastler is hitting a stellar .737
(14-of-19) with six doubles, four walks, 12 runs scored and seven
RBIs.
In game one, Hood had no trouble thanks to another fine outing
from Jamie Gardner, who allowed just three hits, struck out a
career-high 10 and posted her third shutout in her last four
starts.
Gardner set the tone early, striking out the side in the first,
and didn't allow a hit until Jen Liggett singled through the right
side with two outs in the fourth. Wilson also managed a two-out
blooper to shallow left center in the sixth and a single off of
Gardner's shin to start the seventh.
Gardner got all the support she would need when the Blazers
struck for three runs in the second. Wastler drilled a RBI double
to start the scoring, and Bussey added a two-run single.
The Blazers tacked on another run in the third when Mandi
Lambert singled and later scored on a wild pitch. Wastler doubled
the start the fourth and came home on a ground out by Bussey.
Hood closed out the scoring with two unearned runs in the sixth.
The Blazers return to action Saturday when they host two-time
defending conference champion Mary Baldwin (9-10, 6-0 AWCC) in a
key doubleheader showdown beginning at 1 p.m.
