WASHINGTON--Hood returned to its winning ways with a
non-conference doubleheader sweep of host Gallaudet University
Thursday afternoon, taking the opener 10-0 in five innings and
following with a 9-3 win in the nightcap.
Freshman Jamie Gardner tossed both games for the Blazers (18-12)
to collect two more victories and improve to 9-3 on the season.
In the opener, she held Gallaudet (9-18) to just two singles,
struck out six and walked none. She came back in the nightcap and
allowed five hits and one earned run while fanning five and walking
one.
The Blazers (18-12) took control early in game one, scoring
three times in the second and five times in the third before
closing out the game with two more runs in the fifth.
A costly Bison error helped Hood plate its three runs in the
second, and another Gallaudet miscue led to two of Hood's five runs
in the third. Sophomore Alecia Weddle added a RBI double in the
third, while senior Janelle Moss and freshman Sara Wastler followed
with run-scoring singles.
The Blazers closed out the scoring with two unearned runs in the
fifth thanks to two more Bison errors.
Gardner continued her impressive rookie season by allowing just
two hits--singles by Laura Lohmeyer in the first and fourth
innings.
Freshman Jess Krietz led Hood's 12-hit attack, going 3-for-3
with two RBIs and two runs scored.
In game two, the Blazers overcame an early 3-2 deficit by
scoring seven runs over the final four innings to complete the
sweep.
The teams scored two runs each in the first before Gallaudet
moved in front with a run in the third.
The Bison lead was short-lived, however, as senior Heidi Bixler
laced a RBI-single in the fourth to pull Hood even.
Wastler led off the fifth with a solo homer that put the Blazers
ahead for good. Moss created some breathing room with a two-run
double in the sixth.
Hood tacked on three more runs--two unearned after another Bison
error--in the seventh to close out the scoring.
The Blazers pounded another 12 hits in the nightcap. Five
Blazers collected two hits each.
Hood returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Shenandoah for a
non-conference twinbill starting at 4 p.m.
