FREDERICK, Md.--Hood College traded second-half goals with Cedar
Crest College as the teams fought to a 1-1 tie in the consolation
match of the eighth annual Kim Servedio Memorial Tournament Sunday
morning at Thomas Athletic Field.
Hood (0-1-1) controlled the action through much of the contest,
outshooting Cedar Crest 23-5.
The Blazers had an early chance in the game's sixth minute, but
freshman Whitney Boyer's shot from 15 yards out went wide left.
Hood finally broke through in the 56th minute as Boyer took a
long pass from junior Kristina Rendon and sent a roller past Cedar
Crest goalie Antoinette Pizza.
The Blazers had another opportunity just moments later, but
sophomore Liz Rakowski's blast from inside the 18 went just over
the crossbar.
Cedar Crest (0-1-1) pulled even in the 65th minute when Michelle
Johnson-Sychevsky scored off a feed from Hilary Smith.
Hood had the best chance to claim victory down the stretch. With
five minutes left, Rakowski sent a hard shot from 20 yards out
directly into the arms of Pizza, who finished with 10 saves.
Hood freshman Nina Duron made two stops.
Both coaches decided not to play the overtime period in order to
keep the tournament running on schedule.
In the championship game, junior Kristy Morse had a goal and an
assist to lead Mississippi College to a 3-0 win over Neumann
College.
Morse gave Mississippi (2-0) a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when
she headed in a crossing pass from sophomore Marley Bankston.
Senior Jennifer Benson, who scored three times in
Saturdayýs 7-0 win over Cedar Crest, added another goal in
the 21st minute, sending a roller into the right corner of the net
off a feed from senior Tina Deshotels.
Morse added an assist on a goal by junior Laura Leigh Ellis in
the 50th minute to complete the scoring.
Sophomore Mallory Pope made four saves to record the shutout for
Mississippi, which held a 21-4 advantage in shots.
Sophomore Kelsey Toomey had six saves for Neumann.
Hood returns to action Wednesday when it hosts St. Mary's
College of Maryland at 3 p.m.
