WINCHESTER, Va.--The Hood College field hockey team dropped a
2-1 decision to host Shenandoah University in the season opener for
both teams Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Hornets got on the board when
Kelly Matagiese found the cage off a Jenn Iuliano assist exactly
five minutes into the second stanza.
Courtney Beard scored what proved to be the game-winner 11 minutes
later when she redirected a cross from Matagiese.
The Blazers cut their deficit in half at the 63:04 mark when
freshman Steph Holman netted her first collegiate goal. Hood had a
chance to tie the game in the 68th minute, but Shenandoah goalie
Wendy Taylor came up with a point blank save to preserve the Hornet
victory.
Hood goalie Ashley Saylor posted five saves, while Taylor had four
for Shenandoah.
The Blazers return to action Saturday when they host Wells College
in an Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference contest at 10 a.m.
