FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (3-19) split a
tri-match Saturday, falling 3-0 to Emory & Henry College
(16-30, 17-30, 15-30) before coming back to defeat Trinity
University (D.C.) 3-0 (30-16, 30-13, 30-15). Emory & Henry
defeated Trinity in the middle match, 3-0 (30-18, 30-7, 30-13).
In the first match with the Wasps, the Blazers found themselves
in a 15-6 hole before sophomore Leah Garland served five straight
points, capped by a service ace, to pull Hood to within 15-11. But
the Wasps pulled away and outscored Hood 15-5 the rest of the set
to take the first game, 30-16.
In game two, the Blazers got off to a good start by assuming a
4-1 lead but the Wasps rallied to tie the set at 5-5 and then
scored five unanswered points to take a 10-5 edge. After a Blazer
timeout, Hood closed to within 12-6 on a kill by junior Jamie
Gardner but that would be the closest the Blazers would get as
Emory & Henry triumphed 30-17 to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, Emory & Henry scored the first six points
and never trailed, but the Blazers did manage to close to within
27-15 following a pair of aces by senior Lindsey Nagy. The Wasps
secured the final three points of the set to take the match, 3-0.
Nagy finished with a team-high six kills to go along with three
aces and 15 digs, while freshman Kristina Straub tallied four
kills, nine assists and 17 digs. Senior Jamie Bussey tallied a
team-best 19 digs while freshman Katie Worthington and Gardner

In the second match against Trinity, Hood rallied from an 8-5
deficit in game one to take a 9-8 lead on three straight aces by
Nagy. Hood would not trail again in the game and closed out the set
on a kill by Gardner (30-16).
The Blazers poured it on in game two and boasted a remarkable
.348 team hitting percentage en route to a 30-13 victory. Nagy had
seven of her match-high 18 kills in the second set.
In the third game, the Blazers controlled the tempo once again
and at one point broke open a 6-4 game by scoring 13 unanswered
points, capped by a Kristan Hawkins kill which made it 19-4. The
Tigers rallied to cut the deficit to 10 on a kill by Terri Alford
but Hood ripped off the next four straight points and went on to
clinch the match with a 30-15 win.
Hood, which snapped a nine-match losing skid with the win over
Trinity, registered 17 service aces in the match and hit .304 as a
team. Nagy finished with a double-double of 18 kills and a
team-high 23 digs to go along with four aces. Freshman Krista Zerby
served up six aces and collected seven digs while Garland set up 15
Blazer kills and added five digs. Gardner hit an impressive .688
