FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Sarah Balukoff netted her second goal
of the season to snap a five-game scoreless string by the Hood
College field hockey team (3-10) but it was not enough as the
Blazers fell to visiting Goucher College (3-9) by a 2-1 margin in
Hood's regular season home finale Tuesday at Thomas Athletic Field.
Sara Spadanuta got the Gophers on the board in the 29th minute
when she registered an unassisted score. That tally would hold up
at intermission, but the Blazers knotted the score at 1-1 in the
38th minute. Sophomore Lauren Perzan drove the ball from about
eight yards out ahead to the cage where Balukoff was in perfect
position to knock it past Goucher goalie Aline Haddad.
Thirteen minutes later, Spadanuta fed Laura Groomes who scored
what would prove to be the game-winner for the Gophers at the 50:50
mark.
Junior Ashley Saylor turned away four shots for the Blazers, who
were outshot 14-9 on the day. Haddad came up with three saves for
the visitors.
Hood has two regular season games remaining on the docket -
Saturday at Capital Athletic Conference rival St. Mary's College
(Md.) and next Wednesday at former Atlantic Women's Colleges
Conference foe College of Notre Dame.
