FREDERICK, Md.--Jamie Gardner and Kristina Straub each recorded
double-doubles but the Hood College volleyball team (4-23, 0-8 CAC)
came up short Wednesday, falling 3-1 on Senior Day to the visiting
Wesley College Wolverines (10-11, 2-6 CAC) in a Capital
Athletic Conference match at Gambrill Gymnasium.
After dropping the first two sets, the Blazers rallied to upend
the Wolverines in game three, 30-25. Eight different Blazers
collected kills in the third set, including five by Gardner. The
Blazers continued to fight in the fourth set, as the two teams
battled to 10 ties in the frame. But the Wolverines capitalized on
several Blazer miscues, scoring four straight points on Hood attack
errors to go up 23-19. Hood staved off a pair of Wesley match
points but a Wolverine kill clinched the set, 30-23, and the match.
Gardner finished with a team-high 13 kills and 10 digs while
Straub tallied 18 assists and 29 digs. Senior Lindsey Nagy put down
12 kills and had seven digs while classmate Ashley Bryan collected
eight kills and a pair of block assists. Senior Caroline Woodhams
made her return to the court for the first time since Sept. 19 and
set up 14 Blazer kills to go along with three of her own. Senior
Jamie Bussey registered 31 digs to lead the defense.
All four seniors will leave behind a memorable legacy in the
Hood record books. Nagy ranks second all-time in kills (834)
and aces (213), fourth in digs (747) and fifth in games played
(337). Bussey is second all-time in digs (1,052) and seventh in
games played (332); Bryan is seventh in kills (482) and third
in total blocks (153); and Woodhams is second all-time in assists
(1,513), tied for seventh in aces (170) and eighth in games played
(306).
