BALTIMORE, Md.-Ryan Finch hit a fall-away jumper with 15.2
seconds left and Brett Foelber stole the inbounds pass on Hood's
final possession to clinch the third annual Provident Bank Pride of
Maryland Tournament championship for McDaniel College (3-0), 85-84
in triple overtime, over the Hood College men's basketball team
(3-2) Sunday at Johns Hopkins University.
In an incredible see-saw affair which saw 22 lead changes and 13
ties in the 55 minute-affair, both teams showed incredible
resiliency and grit, fighting for every loose ball and rebound.
Hood's biggest lead of the contest was eight, 40-32, at the
11:03 mark of the second half after a conventional three-point play
by junior Ryan Junghans. The Terror chipped their way back into it,
closing to within 42-41 on a Kevin Henry layup at the 8:10 mark and
the lead changed hands five more times in the second stanza.
A jumper by McDaniel's Ryan Finch put McDaniel up 52-51 with
1:18 to go. Robert Koebke stole the inbounds pass on Hood's next
possession. After a Hood timeout, McDaniel was unable to get a shot
off and was whistled for a shot clock violation. Now with 40
seconds left, Junghans' pass sailed out of bounds, leaving 26
seconds on the clock.
McGlone fouled Ryan Finch immediately who went to the line for a
1-and-1 opportunity. Finch missed the front end and Gutekunst
hauled in the carom. Finch then tied up Junghans and forced another
turnover and McDaniel called a timeout with 16.7 ticks left. Koebke
missed front end of 1-and-1 at the other end and Gutekunst once
again grabbed the rebound.
On the fast break, McGlone was fouled on the way to the basket
and went to the line for two with 9.6 seconds. McDaniel burned
another timeout and when play resumed, McGlone, who was 2-of-6 at
the line to that point, nailed the first to tie the game at 52-52.
His second attempt was off the mark and the ball was tipped several
times before McGlone was whistled for a foul, sending Koebke to the
line for McDaniel's third 1-and-1 of the second half. After Hood
called timeout, Koebke missed the front end and McHenry ripped down
the board. Hood pushed up the ball up the court where McGlone and
Finch wrestled for the ball as time expired and the game went into
overtime.
In the first extra session, after Arthur Claybon hit 1-of-2 from
the line with 13.8 ticks left to make it 66-64, Finch swished a
layup over Gutekunst with 0.4 seconds left to force
double-overtime.
Bennett was the catalyst for the Blazers in the second overtime,
netting 10 of Hood's 12 points in the stanza. He also had a chance
to win the game for Hood in the waning seconds but a foul-line
jumper rimmed out and the two teams went to triple overtime.
In the third extra session, Foelber scored McDaniel's first five
points before consecutive layups by Gutekunst made it 83-82
McDaniel with 2:50 to go. Gutekunst then nailed a pair of free
throws to put the Blazers up for the first time since the first
overtime period, 84-83, with 28.8 seconds remaining.
On McDaniel's next possession, Finch drained a fade-away jumper
from the right wing with 15.2 seconds to go. Bennett was tied up
under the basket at the other end and managed to call timeout, but
on the ensuing inbounds play from the baseline, Mike McCarrick's
lob pass to Gutekunst was intercepted by Foelber who dribbled out
the clock to seal the victory.
Gutekunst finished with 23 points and a school-record 25
rebounds. He amassed a total of 61 caroms in the three-day affair,
a new tournament record. Junghans, who fouled out with 2:44 left in
the first overtime, had 17 points and was 7-of-7 from the foul
line. Both Gutekunst and Junghans were named to the all-tournament
team.
Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday at York
