YORK, Pa.--Junior Anthony Bennett scored a career-high 19
points, including 13 in the second half, as the Hood College men's
basketball team (4-2, 1-0 CAC) rallied from a six-point second-half
deficit to earn a 74-68 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
York College (Pa.) (1-3, 0-1 CAC) Wednesday.
The first half saw five ties and six lead changes but the
Blazers managed to build an eight-point lead on a three-pointer by
Bennett and an Arthur Claybon layup with 6:41 to go in the first
half. York erased that deficit over the next 4:20 and eventually
tied the game at 25-25 on a Nick Brady triple. The lead flipflopped
twice more before halftime and the Spartans clung to a 34-30 edge
at the break.
York maintained the upperhand for most of the second half but
midway through the second half Bennett almost single-handedly kept
the Blazers in it. He scored seven points in a 1:15 span to give
the Blazers their first lead of the second half, 49-48, with 8:39
to go in regulation.
The two teams traded buckets on the next several possessions but
from that point the Blazers never relinquished their lead. The
Spartans rallied to knot the score at 61-61 after a three-point
play by Chad McGowan with 3:25 left. But the Blazers responded on
their next possession on a layup by Claybon. York went cold from
the floor, misfiring on their next five field goal attempts. Hood
was solid from the foul line in the final 1:33, nailing 7-of-8 down
the stretch to ice the victory.
Bennett, who two games ago set a new career-high with 18 points
against St. Mary's College (Md.), connected on 5-of-9 from the
floor, including three triples, and 6-of-6 from the foul line for a
team-high 19 points. Gutekunst racked up his sixth consecutive
double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Hood was 15-30 from
the field in the second half and 11-12 from the stripe.
McGowan led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds
in defeat.
The Blazers return to action Saturday hosting another CAC foe,
the University of Mary Washington, at 4 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson
High School.
