NEW CONCORD, OHIO--The Hood College softball team fell to the
fourth-seeded Anderson University Ravens, 11-1, Friday morning in
an elimination game of the NCAA tournament at Muskingum
College.
Hood ends its 2007 campaign with a record of 14-21.
The Blazers started strong as pitching ace Jamie Gardner retired
the first three Raven hitters on fly balls.
In the bottom of the second, Chrissy Harvey notched Hood's first
basehit of the game with a one-out single to right. She then
advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. But Raven hurler
Thompson fanned Jess Krietz and Jen Guyer to end the threat. After
two scoreless innings, the Ravens broke through with three runs in
the top of the third. Kate Richards, Lesli Randall and Dawn Sanders
all drove in runs in the frame.
Gardner worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, stranding two
Raven baserunners. Erin Garrity lined a one-out single to
rightfield and Richards drew a walk with two outs which brought up
leadoff hitter Julia Siefring. But Gardner got Siefring to fly out
to Ashley Lenhart in center to retire the side.
After two more scoreless innings for the Blazers, the Ravens
doubled their run total with three in the top of the fifth. Randall
belted a solo homerun while Christy Fox and Richards each
registered run-scoring singles to put Anderson up 6-0. But Gardner
once again got Siefring to fly out to center to prevent further
damage.
Sanders would connect on a two-run homer in the top of the sixth
to bump the Raven lead to 8-0. In the bottom half, the first two
Blazer hitters struck out, but leadoff hitter Sara Wastler kept
Hood alive with a clutch double to left-center. Tamara Maggard,
playing in what would prove to be her final collegiate contest,
smoked a single to center which plated Wastler for Hood's first run
of the tournament. Jamie Bussey kept the hit parade going with a
single to center to put runners at first and second with two away.
But the Blazers were unable to add to their run total as Kara
Robert was retired on a fly ball to left.
In the top of the seventh, the Ravens stretched their lead to 11-1
by virtue of three singles, a double, a hit batter and a passed
ball.
In the bottom of the frame, Thompson faced the heart of the Blazer
lineup. After Harvey grounded out to short, Krietz singled to left
but was erased on a fielder's choice by Guyer. Guyer would advance
to second on a passed ball before Katherine Law was retired on
strikes for the final out of the game.
Gardner suffered the loss, allowing 11 runs on 16 hits with three
walks and a pair of strikeouts. Thompson went the distance for
Anderson, surrendering a single run on five hits with 10 strikeouts
and no walks.
