FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Lauren Perzan
converted a penalty stroke 1:18 into overtime to lift the Hood
College field hockey team (2-4) to a 1-0 overtime victory over the
visiting Wilson College Phoenix (5-3) Monday afternoon at Thomas
Athletic Field.
The Blazers and Phoenix shared a heated
rivalry for years in the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference, as
four of the last six meetings have been decided by a single goal.
In Monday's contest, the two teams remained deadlocked in a
scoreless tie for the entire 70 minutes of regulation.
In the sudden victory overtime, Wilson
goalie Nikola Grafnetterova charged out of the cage and in an
attempt to deflect a Blazer shot away from the cage, but was
whistled for a foul which resulted in a penalty stroke for Hood.
Grafnetterova was then lifted for reserve keeper Janessa Demeule to
go one-on-one with Perzan. Perzan fired her shot to Demeule's right
and into the corner of the cage to seal Hood's first home victory
of the season.
Junior Ashley Saylor recorded her first
shutout of the season and made two saves in the cage for
Hood.
Hood returns to action Sunday hosting
Sweet Briar College in nonconference action at 2 p.m. at Thomas
Athletic Field.
