DOVER, Del.--Junior Tim Abercrombie scored 12 of his season-high
18 points in the second half to lift the Hood College men's
basketball team (11-4, 5-1 CAC) to a come-from-behind 70-64 victory
over Wesley College (8-6, 3-2 CAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers, winners of three straight, now take over sole
possession of first place in the Capital Athletic Conference with a
5-1 league record. Hood also improves to 5-0 on the road and 2-1
all-time against Wesley.
Hood used an 8-0 run over a span of 2:39 and built a 10-point
lead at the 8:05 mark of the first half. But the Wolverines
countered and eventually tied the score at 25-25 on a three-pointer
by James Stratton with three minutes remaining in the period.
Wesley went on to score the final 10 points of the half and owned a
35-25 lead at the break.
The Blazers dug their way out of the double-figure deficit and
closed to within 42-41 on a transition layup by Abercrombie at the
14:06 mark. Wesley maintained the upperhand until junior Ryan
Junghans converted a rare four-point play to regain a 58-57 edge
for Hood with 4:25 remaining in regulation. Hood never trailed
again as Abercrombie netted eight straight points and Junghans
connected on 4-of-4 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the
victory.
Junghans finished with a team-high 20 points on 6-of-12
shooting. Abercrombie had his best game of the season, hitting
8-of-10 from the field and grabbed five rebounds. Junior Anthony
Bennett also reached double figures with 11 points and dished out
three assists. Senior Arthur Claybon collected two assists and
grabbed a team- and career-high nine rebounds. Freshman Tyler
Snoots played a season-high 19 minutes in a reserve role and hauled
in six rebounds.
Rashawn Johnson, the league's leading scorer, played all 40
minutes and finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Blazers are idle until Jan. 19 when they return to Gov.
Thomas Johnson High School to host Villa Julie College at 8 p.m.
