FREDERICK, Md.--The Gettysburg College Bullets (8-2) erased a
12-point second half deficit and connected on 9-of-11 from the foul
line in the extra session to earn a 94-87 overtime victory over the
Hood College men's basketball team (8-4) Saturday.
After trailing for most of the first half, the Blazers finally
grabbed their first lead of the game (34-33) with 4:45 to go on a
rare four-point play by junior Ryan Junghans. A buzzer-beating
layup by senior Jesse Gutekunst sent the Blazers into the
lockerroom with a 43-39 edge.
Hood raced out of the gates in the second half, scoring the
first seven points of the stanza on a Tim Abercrombie triple and
layups by Gutekunst and junior Jeff Willison to assume a
double-figure lead (50-39) in the first 2:14. The Blazers' largest
lead of the contest was 12 after a Junghans trey put the Blazers on
top 56-44 at the 13:50 mark.
Trailing by 11 with 8:20 to play, the Bullets gradually whittled
the deficit down to a one-possession game again over the next three
minutes and closed to within 74-71 on a Corey Dorsey three-pointer.
The Bullets, who drained 10 long-range buckets in the
contest, got another clutch trey from Kevin Kennedy with 2:05
to play to knot the score at 78-78. Neither squad was able to
connect on another bucket for the remainder of regulation. Junior
Anthony Bennett had a chance to win the game in the closing
seconds. His leaner in the lane rimmed out and despite
contact with a Bullet defender, no foul was called and the
Blazers found themselves headed for their third overtime game of
the season.
The Blazers and Bullets traded baskets for the first three
minutes of the extra session. A pair of foul shots by Bennett drew
the Blazers even at 87-87 with 2:01 remaining. But from there, Hood
turned the ball over three times and managed just two desperation
three-point attempts in the final eight seconds of the period.
Gettysburg's Joe Spierenburg gave the Bullets the lead for
good on a conventional three-point play and the visitors
nailed 4-of-6 from the foul line to clinch the victory.
Gutekunst paced the Blazers with 23 points on 10-of-19 from the
floor and picked off five steals. Bennett matched his career-high
with 19 points before fouling out in overtime, while Junghans
finished with 17 and Abercrombie tallied 11 points and dished out
four assists.
Dan Capkin led all scorers with 24 points for Gettysburg,
including 4-of-7 from deep, and was one of five Bullets to reach
double figures. Spierenburg registered a double-double of 23 points
and 11 rebounds and blocked five shots.
The Blazers look to get back on the winning track Monday hosting
Penn State University-York at 8 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School in the second game of a doubleheader with the Hood women's
team.
