ARLINGTON, Va.--Junior Ryan Junghans broke his school record
with nine three-point field goals and finished with 36 points to
power the Hood College men's basketball team (10-4, 4-1
CAC) to a 92-88 Capital Athletic Conference victory over
Marymount University (7-5, 2-3 CAC) Wednesday.
It took Junghans just four seconds to drain his first triple of
the contest which gave Hood an early 3-0 lead off the opening tip.
The Blazers maintained that lead until an 8-0 Marymount run turned
a 12-9 deficit into a 17-12 lead, forcing Hood to burn a 30-second
timeout. The Blazers quickly drew even on consecutive treys by
Junghans and freshman Mark McGlone. Later in the half, it was the
Blazers who ripped off eight straight points to assume a 27-22 lead
with 5:37 to go. Sophomore Mike McCarrick would bury a three with
just over two minutes to play to stretch the Blazer lead to 10,
40-30, and Hood owned a 44-35 advantage at intermission.
The Blazers would not trail again in the contest but the Saints
made it interesting down the stretch. Hood led 84-76 with 1:25 to
go in regulation. Marymount swished a pair of three pointers on
consecutive possessions to quickly slice the lead to two with under
a minute to play. After a technical foul was assessed on the
Marymount bench for having six players on the floor,
Junghans the ensuing free throws and the Blazers retained
possession. The Saints fouled sophomore Nick Scott immediately who
went to the line for two. He made both to stretch the lead back to
six with 44 seconds left.
Marymount's Bryant Majors would connect on two more
three-pointers in the closing seconds, the second of which made it
a one-point game with 19 ticks left, but McGlone, junior
Anthony Bennett and Scott nailed 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to
clinch the narrow victory.
Junghans led all scorers with 36 points, two shy of tying his
career-high, and eclipsed his school record of eight treys set last
season against King's Point. Bennett recorded the first 20-point
game of his career with a career-high 21 points, including 10-of-11
from the foul line. Scott reached double figures for the second
straight game with 11.
The Saints outrebounded the Blazers by 15 and attempted 20 more
field goals, but the Blazers shot 60.9 percent from the field
(28-of-46), connected on 12-of-19 from downtown and nailed 24-of-28
free throws to remain perfect on the road (4-0).
Hood looks to make it five straight on the road when the Blazers
travel to CAC rival Wesley College Saturday at 4 p.m.
