FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (2-17, 0-7 CAC)
lost in three sets (17-25, 14-25, 8-25) to the visiting York
College (Pa.) Spartans (17-11, 4-4 CAC) Wednesday in a Capital
Athletic Conference match at Gambrill Gymnasium.
The Blazers and Spartans exchanged points early on before a pair
of errors by York gave Hood an 11-8 lead. The Spartans rallied
however and took a 13-12 edge on a kill by Alishia Waltermyer,
forcing Hood to call timeout. York would not relinquish its lead
and went on to capture the first set, 25-17.
In the second set with the score knotted at 5-5, the Spartans
outscored the Blazers 12-4 to assume a 17-9 advantage. The Blazers
got no closer than seven the rest of the way and York took the
second set, 25-14.
York scored the first five points of the third set and never
trailed, clinching the match with a 25-8 triumph.
Sophomore Kristan Hawkins smacked a season-high nine kills to
pace the Blazer attack while classmate Kristina Straub chipped in
six and set up 12 others. Chelsea Weaver finished with four kills
and six digs and Leah Garland added nine assists.
York's Waltermyer hit .647, racking up 11 kills on 17 attempts
with no errors to lead the visitors.
Hood has two matches left on its fall slate: a CAC matchup at
the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, Oct. 29 and its
home finale Thursday, Oct. 30 against Catholic University.
