FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's baksetball team (3-2) saw
its string of four straight home opening victories come to and end
Tuesday evening after an 84-72 defeat at the hands of the
Shenandoah University Hornets (2-3) at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School.
The first half saw five ties and 10 lead changes as neither
squad led by more than six points. In fact, an improbable
half-court heave from Wayne Washington as the buzzer sounded gave
the Hornets their biggest lead of the half, 37-31, as the teams
headed to the lockeroom.
Shenandoah entered Tuesday's game having drained only seven
three-point field goals in its first four contests but buried
5-of-10 from distance in the first 20 minutes.
Hood misfired on five of its first six shots of the second half
and turned the ball over on three straight possessions, allowing
the Hornets to build a nine-point advantage 3:10 in. Sophomore
Tyler Snoots led a Hood surge which eventually saw the Blazers draw
even at 44-44 with 14:35 to play in regulation. Snoots scored four
points and hauled in a pair of caroms in the run.
A triple by freshman Garrett Williams gave the Blazers their
first lead of the second half, 48-46, at the 12:48 mark. The score
was deadlocked four more times before the Blazers went cold once
again from the floor.
Trailing 64-63 with 6:49 to play, Hood was able to convert just
two of its final eight field goal attempts and 4-of-10 from the
foul line down the stretch. Shenandoah meanwhile hit 9-of-10 from
the stripe and outscored Hood 11-1 over the final 2:18 to emerge
with the victory.
Williams came off the bench to net a team-high 13 points while
Tim Abercormbie finished with 12 and Snoots had 11. Hood's leading
scorer Ryan Junghans was limited to eight points on 2-of-11
shooting in 35 minutes of work.
Demetrius Landy led all scorers with 15 points to lead three
Hornets in double figures. Shenandoah eclipsed its three-point
total on the season, hitting 9-of-19 after connecting on 7-of-50 in
its first four games.
Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference play Wednesday hosting
York College (Pa.) at Frederick Community College at 8 p.m.
