FREDERICK, Md.--In the longest game in Hood College men's
basketball history, the third-place Blazers (14-9, 8-6 CAC) bowed
to the fourth-place Wesley College Wolverines (13-10, 8-6 CAC)
Monday, 111-106 in four overtimes, at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School.
Hood has played a total of five overtime games this season - two
single overtimes, one double OT, one triple OT and last night set a
new program record by engaging in 60 minutes of court time with the
Wolverines, a team it defeated 70-64 in regulation on Jan. 12. It
was also the longest game in the CAC this season.
The first half featured four ties and four lead changes. The
Wolverines' largest lead of the half was nine points after James
Stratton put back a Rashawn Johnson miss to give the visitors a
36-27 lead with 1:29 left in the period. But four foul shots by
Mark McGlone and Tim Abercrombie trimmed the deficit to 36-31 at
the break.
Wesley maintained its lead until the 6:24 mark of the second
half when Mike McCarrick put back a miss by McGlone to make it
64-63 Hood. But the lead would be short lived as Wesley used a
three-pointer from Johnson, a conventional three-point play by Dan
Henry and a Cody White layup to take a five-point lead (71-66) with
3:25 to go in regulation.
In the final minute, the Wolverines clung to a four-point edge
after a Stratton jumper with 39 ticks to go but McGlone answered at
the other end with a bucket to cut it to two. After a Blazer
timeout, Abercrombie fouled Khyle Nelson, who went to the line to
shoot the one-and-one. He missed the front end and Tyler Snoots
grabbed the carom. Nick Scott took off down the court, knifing
through the Wesley defenders all the way to the rim for the
game-tying layup and the foul with 14 seconds to go. Scott was
unable to hit the free throw and Nelson hauled in the rebound. But
at the other end, Johnson's entry pass was mishandled by one of his
teammates and the game went into overtime.
Wesley led virtually the entire way in the first overtime, but a
pair of clutch free throws by McCarrick with 22 seconds left made
it 83-83 heading into the second extra session.
Hood led once in the second overtime, 89-87, after a layup by
Junghans. It was also Junghans who buried the game-tying triple
from the left corner off an inbounds pass from Abercrombie with
under 10 seconds to go which sent the game into triple OT.
The Blazers and Wolverines traded baskets once again in the
third overtime, but this time it was Arthur Claybon who converted a
transition layup with 37 seconds to go to force the fourth overtime
session. Wesley's Johnson, the league's leading
scorer, misfired on two potential game-winning jumpers in the
closing seconds of both the second and third overtimes.
Despite making just one field goal in the fourth overtime, the
Wolverines connected on 10-of-10 from the charity stripe
to emerge victorious. The Blazers won the opening tip of the
fourth overtime and went up 101-99 on a Jeff Willison layup
but nailed just 2-of-7 from the field the rest of the way.
Junghans fouled out with 3:52 to play in the fourth overtime but
finished with a team-high 27 points, five assists and a
career-high seven rebounds. He was one of six Blazers to reach
double figures. McGlone netted 16 points, while Abercrombie
finished with 13 and Bennett tallied 11. Scott and Snoots each
chipped in 10. For Snoots, it was the first double-figure scoring
game of his Blazer career.
Stratton paced the Wolverines with a game-high 35 points,
including five treys. Three Wesley players recorded double-doubles
as the Wolverines finished with 28 offensive rebounds.
Hood and Wesley are now tied for that elusive fourth-place
position in the league with two games remaining. The Blazers next
travel to Villa Julie College (6-17, 4-10 CAC), currently in eighth
place in the conference, Wednesday for an 8 p.m. game.
