FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Tyler Snoots recorded his first career
double-double to lead the Hood College men's basketball team
(15-10, 9-7 CAC) to a 73-72 victory over Salisbury University
(6-19, 4-12 CAC) Saturday afternoon at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School.
Salisbury held the upperhand early but the Blazers used a 10-0
run over 2:22 to assume a 14-9 lead with 12:16 to go in the first
half. Hood led by as many as 10 in the stanza before the Sea Gulls
gradually trimmed the deficit to one (25-24) on a pair of free
throws with 6:26 left. The Blazers held a slim 38-34 lead at the
break.
Hood shot 52 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes,
sinking 13-of-25. Junghans netted 11 points in the first half to
lead all scorers.
The second half featured four ties and eight lead
changes in another game that came down to the wire. Tim
Abercrombie drilled a three-pointer with 48 seconds left to put the
Blazers up six, 70-64. Then with 31 seconds left, Gary Ward knocked
down a trey of his own to make it 71-69. Following a Salisbury
timeout, the Sea Gulls fouled Abercrombie who went to the line for
two with 20 ticks left. He calmly hit both to make it a four-point
game. The Sea Gulls got another clutch triple from Greg Palmer with
:02 seconds left to cut it to one. Salisbury then fouled Mark
McGlone immediately, and he missed the first foul shot to
leave the door open for the Sea Gulls. McGlone missed the second
foul shot intentionally and despite coming down with the carom, the
Sea Gulls were unable to get a shot off as time expired.
Ryan Junghans led all scorers with 22 points including a pair of
three-pointers. Snoots set career-highs with 18 points and 11
boards in 20 minutes of work off the bench.
Ward keyed the Sea Gull offense with 19 points and drilled four
three-pointers in the losing cause.
The Blazers clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's CAC
tournament and will host the No. 6 seed Marymount University
Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
