FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Ryan Junghans became the third player in
Hood College men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point
plateau but the Blazers' (14-8, 8-5 CAC) second-half rally came up
short in an 89-76 loss to Marymount University (12-9, 6-6 CAC)
Saturday.
The Blazers and Saints traded field goals in the early going but
with the score knotted at 11-11 with 12:36 to go in the first half,
the Saints went on a 15-3 run over the next five minutes to assume
a 26-14 advantage. From there, Marymount continued to pour it on,
leading by as many as 21 in the stanza, and took a 46-28 lead into
the lockerroom.
Shaun Ingram had the hot hand for the Saints, netting 18
first-half points, including three three-pointers. Hood's Mark
McGlone had a solid first half as well, tallying 11 points to go
along with six rebounds.
The Saints maintained a double-figure lead for most of the half
until two triples by Tim Abercrombie and a pair of foul shots by
Allen Kees cut the deficit to eight, 84-76, with a minute to play.
But time ran out on the Blazers, who misfired on their final three
long-range shots of the contest.
Junghans registered a team-high 17 points and became the third
member of Hood's 1,000-point club, joining Santo Provenzano and
Jesse Gutekunst. He made 7-of-14 from the floor and netted 15
points in the second half. McGlone finished with his second career
double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Abercrombie finished
with 15 points and Anthony Bennett added 10 off the bench.
Marymount's Fred Stanback led all scorers with 25 points and
grabbed 13 rebounds while Ingram tallied 24 for the victors.
The Blazers, still in third place in the CAC
standings, wrap up their four-game homestand Tuesday hosting
fourth-place Wesley College at 8 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High
School.
