WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Hood College softball team (15-5)
stretched its win streak to 13 in a row with four more victories
Saturday and Sunday en route to capturing the Gallaudet
University tournament championship in Washington, D.C.
Hood picked up a pair of five-inning victories Saturday against
two former Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference rivals, Wells
College (17-4) and the College of Notre Dame (12-0). Katherine Law
went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Alecia Weddle went 4-for-4 with
four runs scored and drove in a pair in the lopsided victory. After
Wells took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, the Blazers posted
multiple runs in each of the next four frames, scoring three in the
second, six in the third, five in the fourth and three more in the
fifth. Jamie Gardner went the distance, striking out five batters
over five innings while only surrendering one earned run.
In the next game against the Gators, Gardner was virtually
untouchable, allowing just three singles over five innings en route
to her fourth shutout of the season. Law, Gardner and Ashley
Lenhart all had multi-hit games for Hood.
The Blazers then took on the host Bison in the third game of the
tournament. Despite collecting just seven basehits, Hood
capitalized on six Gallaudet fielding errors to come away with a
narrow 9-8 victory. Steph Gardner blasted a grand slam, her first
round-tripper of the spring, in the bottom of the first inning to
spark the Blazer offense. Sara Wastler went 2-for-4 with three runs
scored and Erica Hamor worked four innings in the circle for her
third victory in the blue and gray.
In the fourth game, the Blazers defeated the Phoenix 10-3 in a
rematch of the tournament opener. Jen Lacy went 3-for-3 with a
double, a triple, three RBI and a run scored as the Blazers plated
10 runs on 14 basehits. Gardner was the victor once again, allowing
two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Jamie Gardner was selected as the tournament Most Oustanding
Player for picking up three pitching victories and batting .467
with eight RBI on the weekend.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday at the University of Mary
Washington for a 3 p.m. Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader.
