FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (15-9, 5-5 CAC)
dropped a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to the visiting
York College (Pa.) Spartans (21-5, 10-0 CAC) by scores of 6-2 and
10-0 (6 innings) Thursday.
York's pitching trio of Megan Lahner, Monica Weaver and Megan
Mickles limited the Blazers to just three basehits in the twinbill.
In the opener, Hood trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the
seventh but rallied for a pair of runs off reliever Weaver. Alecia
Weddle drew a two-out walk and Tiera Hawkes came in to run at
first. Jen Willison then laced an RBI-double down the left field
line and came around to score herself when the throw in from left
field was mishandled by catcher Kristen Gray. But Jen Lacy grounded
out to short to end the Blazer threat.
In the nightcap, Mickles was virtually untouchable, amassing 14
strikeouts over six innings and surrendering just a single basehit,
a bunt single by Sara Wastler in the bottom of the first, for her
10th victory of the spring. The Spartans scored two in the first,
four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to
secure their ninth straight victory.
Hood looks to get back on the winning track Sunday hosting
Salisbury University for a CAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. The
Blazers will honor seniors Kate Hassell and Alecia Weddle before
the contest.
