FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (0-8, 0-2 CAC)
dropped a 3-0 decision (14-25, 15-25, 7-25) to the visiting St.
Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks (10-1, 2-0 CAC) Friday evening in a
Capital Athletic Conference match at Gambrill Gymnasium.
In the first set with the score knotted at 5-5, the Seahawks
reeled off five straight points to double up the Blazers and assume
a 10-5 lead. Hood closed to within three (10-13) on a pair of
blocks by Jamie Gardner and Kristan Hawkins but the Seahawks never
relinquished their advantage and went on to take the first set
25-14.
Hood and St. Mary's traded points to start the second set before
St. Mary's scored seven consecutive points to go up 18-8. Hood held
off three Seahawk set points before Jen Lamar sealed the set with
one of her five kills.
St. Mary's scored 15 of the first 18 points of the third set and
went on to capture the match with a 25-7 win in the frame.
Gardner and Chelsea Weaver put down four kills apiece while
Kristan Hawkins tallied three and Ashley Burns had a pair. Bailey
Runkles racked up 12 digs to pace the defense while Kristina Straub
finished with six assists, five digs and three total blocks.
The Blazers continue CAC play Tuesday at Marymount
University for a 7 p.m. match.
