FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-11) dropped
a 3-0 decision (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) to the visiting Goucher
College Gophers (10-10) Saturday at Gambrill Gymnasium.
In the first set, Hood trailed early but rallied to knot the
score at 8-8 on an ace by Chelsea Weaver. From there, the Gophers
outscored the Blazers 11-3 to assume a 19-11 advantage. Hood closed
to within five points (22-17) after a Gopher hitting error but got
no closer as Goucher went on to take the first set, 25-19.
Hood led briefly to start set number two after a service ace by
Jamie Gardner, but the Gophers quickly regained the advantage
following a Blazer miscue (3-2) and never lost their lead the rest
of the set.
The third set featured a number of lead changes at the onset but
the Gophers seized control on three straight Hood errors, forcing
the Blazers to call timeout trailing 10-6. Hood amassed nine kills
in the third set, but was unable to recapture the lead and Goucher
completed the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third set.
Ashley Burns tallied six kills to pace the offense while Gardner
and Kristina Straub put down two apiece. Straub also set up eight
Hood kills and had four digs. Lena Bushrod (17) and
Weaver (14) combined for 31 digs to spearhead the defense.
Hood returns to Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday
hosting Salisbury University at 7 p.m. at Gambrill Gymnasium.
