FREDERICK, Md.--The Salisbury University Sea Gulls (9-9, 6-3
CAC) captured their fourth straight Capital Athletic Conference
decision, 86-85, over the Hood College men's basketball team (5-12,
2-6 CAC) Saturday afternoon at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
Salisbury's Devin Jones single-handedly scored the first 13
points of the game for the visitors, who built a 22-6 lead over the
first 7:05. The Sea Gulls shot a very efficient 55.2 percent from
the field in the first 20 minutes and took a 10-point edge (41-31)
into the break.
It took most of the second stanza but Hood gradually widdled a
12-point deficit down to just two on a three-pointer by J'Air Brady
with 3:47 left in regulation. Just over a minute later, Brenden
Straughn found Garrett Williams on the left baseline who buried his
second trey of the afternoon to give Hood its first lead of the
day, 80-79, with 2:46 to play.
Salisbury regained the lead on its next possession on a jumper
by Sean Whittaker. Then on the next play, Salisbury's Chris McGrew
was whistled for his fifth foul, which sent Brady to the line for
two. He made them both to regain a slim 81-80 edge for the Blazers.
On Salisbury's next possession, Ryan Hourihan converted a layup and
was fouled. Hourihan completed the three-point play, giving a
two-point advantage back to the Sea Gulls with 2:07 remaining.
The Blazers and Sea Gulls were unable to cash in on their next
three exchanges until Jones was fouled by Williams with 22 ticks
left. Jones nailed both foul shots to make it 86-82
Salisbury.
On Hood's next possession, Straughn slashed to the basket
looking to hit a quick two. His shot was off the mark but Herb
Bowen was there for the offensive carom. Bowen was fouled by Jones
and went to the line for two with 14 seconds to go. Bowen hit the
first but the Blazers were whistled for a lane violation on the
second attempt, giving the ball back to Salisbury.
Greg Palmer looked to inbound the ball to Jones in front of the
Hood bench, but Palmer's pass glanced off Jones' fingertips and out
of bounds, giving the ball back to Hood under its own basket. This
time Straughn's runner in the lane was true, making it 86-85
Salisbury with 10 seconds left, and Hood called its final timeout.
After attempting a lateral pass along the baseline, Salisbury
threw the ball out of bounds again, giving the Blazers one last
shot at a game-winner. But neither Brady nor Williams were able to
hit the clutch basket as the final 5.3 seconds ticked off the clock
and the Sea Gulls escaped with the win.
Brady keyed the Blazer offense with 19 points while Abercrombie
tallied 17. Straughn contributed 15 points and six assists while
Jeff Willison chipped in 10.
Salisbury's Jones led all scorers with 32 points, including 20
in the first half, while Palmer finished with 22.
Hood next travels to York College (Pa.) Wednesday for an 8 p.m.
CAC tilt.
