FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-11, 0-4 CAC)
came up on the short end of a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference
decision (25-10, 25-20, 25-20) to the visiting Marymount University
(Va.) Saints (8-8, 1-3 CAC) Thursday evening at Gambrill Gym.
The Saints jumped out to a 12-4 lead to start the first set,
Hood got no closer than seven the rest of the way as the visitors
took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-10 win.
In set two, Marymount again held the early lead but the Blazers
wouldn't go away. Hood capitalized on three Saint errors to close
to within 14-12, forcing the Saints to call a timeout. But MU
outscored the Blazers 6-1 over the next stretch to go up 20-13, and
Hood used a timeout to regroup. Hood chipped away at the Saint
advantage on a kill and an ace by Brittany Tribett and a pair of
kills by Leah Garland to close to within 22-20. However the Saints
registered the final three points of the set on a Blazer serving
error, a kill by Michelle McCormick and an ace by Johnnie Ann Drew
to go up 2-0 in the match.
The Blazers had the upperhand in the early going of set number
three, using another Tribett kill and a Saint serving error to take
a 7-5 edge. Marymount reeled off four straight points to secure a
lead it would not surrender. Hood rallied late to get within two,
22-20, on a Marymount attack error, but the Saints closed out the
match on an ace by Courtny Carroll.
Tribett finished with four kills, eight assists and six digs
while Garland and Kristina Straub chipped in three kills apiece.
Chelsea Weaver and Ashley Burns contributed seven digs apiece.
Hood's next match is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 6, against CAC
rival Stevenson University at 7 p.m.
