FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Maria Smith netted the game-winning
goal in the 63rd minute to propel the Hood College field hockey
team (5-10) to a 2-1 nonconference victory over visiting Wilson
College (4-10) on Senior Day at Thomas Athletic Field.
The last five meetings between the Blazers and Phoenix have been
decided by one goal. This time, the Blazers avenged a 2-1 defeat to
Wilson from last season's stroke-off in Chambersburg. Hood also
ends the 2009 season with a winning nonconference record (5-4).
After a scoreless first half, senior and leading scorer Brandy
Noel notched her seventh goal of the season in the 48th minute.
Freshman Michelle Buhrman's shot deflected off a Phoenix defender
and Noel was positioned perfectly in front of the cage for the
score.
The Phoenix netted the equalizer off a penalty corner in the
59th minute. Whitney Hawkins drove the ball to the top of the arc
for Jami DeVanie, who fed Megan Dennis for her first score of the
season.
But a little more than four minuntes later, Smith knocked in her
fourth goal of the fall off a pass from Noel, which proved to be
the game-winner.
Hood outscored the Phoenix 12-6 and held a 10-7 advantage on
corners. Hood's Anne Marie Hantman made four stops in the win while
Nikola Grafnetterova was credited with three saves in defeat.
Hood also recognized seniors Noel, Sarah Balukoff, Jen Graham
and Lauren Perzan before the contest.
