FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (5-20) came up
on the short end of a 3-0 nonconference decision (25-23, 25-7,
25-17) to the Goucher College Gophers (16-11) Friday evening in its
season finale at Gambrill Gymnasium.
Hood had to play catch-up for most of the first set but used
some outstanding serving from Chelsea Weaver to turn a 16-14
deficit into an 18-16 lead. Weaver served up four consecutive aces
for the Blazers in that span. But the Gophers regained the lead,
22-21, on back-to-back kills by Catie Ditmore and would not trail
again, sealing the set on a Megan Smith kill.
Goucher ripped off the first 11 points of the second set and
never looked back, taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-7 win.
Trailing 11-8 in set number three, Hood reeled off five straight
points to take a 13-11 edge on a kill by Ashley Burns. The Blazers
and Gophers traded points over the next several exchanges until the
Gophers scored the final seven points of the frame to clinch the
match with a 25-17 triumph.
Kristina Straub had a team-high five kills while freshman
Brittany Tribett contributed four kills, eight assists and a
team-high 14 digs. Weaver finished with five aces and 12 digs and
Kristan Hawkins, Burns and Brittany Lethbridge tallied one kill
apiece.
Hood bid farewell to its two seniors tonight who played their
final matches in the blue and grey. Burns finished with one kill,
one assist and seven digs while Leah Garland tallied one assist and
three digs.
