PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Junior center Tyler Snoots tallied a
career-high 21 points on 10-of-17 shooting for the Hood College
men's basketball team (2-3) in a 77-67 loss to the Carnegie Mellon
University Tartans (2-3) Sunday in the consolation final of the
Radisson/Carnegie Mellon Tournament.
The Tartans used solid perimeter shooting early on to take a
14-6 lead 3:27 into the game. John Durling drilled back-to-back
threes and Shane Rife also hit from distance for the hosts. But
from there the Blazers used a 12-2 run, capped by a layup in
transition by senior guard Anthony Bennett, to go up 17-16 midway
through the period.
But in the final 9:49 of the first half, Hood connected on just
3-of-11 from the field in addition to turning the ball over six
times and trailed 33-24 at halftime.
Jack Anderson gave CMU its largest lead of the day, 36-24, with
a trey at the 18:42 mark. But the Blazers managed to trim the
double-figure deficit down to just two when sophomore forward Herb
Bowen buried his first of two three-pointers on the afternoon to
make it 43-41 with 13:52 remaining, forcing the Tartans to call
timeout.
Hood was unable to reclaim the lead however and the Tartans hit
all six of their foul shots in the final 2:07 to keep the Blazers
at bay.
Snoots, who represented Hood on the all-tournament team, also
pulled down seven boards and blocked three shots in defeat. Junior
Reco Siler finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 12
points and a team-high nine rebounds while senior J'Air Brady
fouled out with 10 points and five caroms. Sophomore guard Brenden
Straughn also fouled out with five points and a team-best six
assists. Bowen provided a spark off the bench with nine points,
three boards, a steal and a block.
Four of CMU's five starters reached double figures, led by
Matthew Pettit's 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Hood opens Capital Athletic Conference action Wednesday when it
travels to Salisbury University for an 8 p.m. tilt.
