FREDERICK, Md.--Sophomore Brenden Straughn registered his second
career double-double with season-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds
as the Hood College men's basketball team (4-3, 2-0 CAC) knocked
off the visiting University of Mary Washington Eagles (3-4, 1-1
CAC), 68-58, Friday night at the Odom Fitness Center at Ft.
Detrick.
Hood is off to its first-ever 2-0 start in CAC action and
improves to 3-4 all-time against Mary Washington.
The Eagles struggled offensively in the early going, hitting
just one of its first 11 shots from the floor. In fact, the Blazers
did not surrender an Eagle field goal until senior center Brandon
Altmann jammed one home off a feed from Eric Rolander at the 12:57
mark. A Tyler Snoots jumper at the 10:43 mark gave Hood its biggest
lead of the first half, 14-4. The Blazers did not allow the Eagles
to get closer than four and took a 32-24 lead at the break.
Hood never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 15
following a conventional three-point play by J'Air Brady at the
8:27 mark.
Straughn has excelled in the past against the Eagles, pumping in
29 points in last season's 97-81 Hood win in Frederick, and the
Blazer point guard rose to the challenge once again. He hit 8-of-15
from the field, including four treys, and dished out four assists.
Three other Blazers reached double figures as Brady and Snoots
contributed 15 apiece while Reco Siler finished with 12 to go along
with three steals and two assists.
Hood drained a season-high nine three-pointers and shot 44
percent from the field in the win.
Altmann also recorded a double-double with 20 points and a
game-high 12 rebounds while Qaiser Ahmed tallied seven points,
eight rebounds and eight assists in defeat.
Hood next hosts St. Vincent College Friday at 8 p.m. at the Odom
Fitness Center.
