FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Garrett Williams drilled a clutch
three-pointer with six seconds left to give the Hood College men's
basketball team (8-15, 5-9 CAC) a stunning 86-83 victory over the
Wesley College Wolverines (15-7, 11-2 CAC) Wednesday on Senior
Night at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
The Blazers, currently in eighth place in the CAC standings,
kept their playoff hopes alive with the dramatic upset of the
previously top-ranked team in the league. Hood won back-to-back
games for the first time since November and handed the Wolverines
just their second conference loss of the season. The Blazers, who
avenged a 102-88 loss to the Wolverines from January, joined the
Marymount University Saints as the only CAC teams to take down
Wesley.
After exchanging baskets in the early going, the Wolverines used
three straight triples by Evan Martin and a Rashawn Johnson jumper
to take an 11-point edge, 34-23, with 8:56 to play in the first
half. But Hood gradually chipped away at the deficit, countering
Wesley's hot perimeter shooting with a solid inside game. Layups by
J'Air Brady, Chris Carson and Tyler Snoots drew the Blazers even at
the break (47-47).
Martin buried four of Wesley's seven long-range buckets in the
first half. Hood's frontcourt contingent of Snoots, Jeff Willison,
Brady and Herb Bowen tallied 28 of Hood's 47 first-half points.
The second half was a different story for the Wolverines, who
connected on just 1-of-16 from downtown in the final 20 minutes.
Holding a 64-60 lead with 10:36 to go in the second half, Wesley
used a 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the game, 74-62, with
7:32 left in regulation. Johnson netted eight points in the spurt.
But the Blazers made quick work of the double-figure deficit,
using a 14-4 run of their own to close to within two, 78-76, with
4:55 to go. Brady swished a pair of three-pointers in the burst.
Two minutes later, Tim Abercrombie found Garrett Williams on the
perimeter for a three which regained the lead for Hood, 81-80, with
2:58 to play.
Until this point in the game, the Blazers had barely held the
lead for three of the game's 37 minutes. But Hood made that late
advantage stand, in no small part due to more clutch shooting down
the stretch from Williams.
After a Snoots layup gave the Blazers an 83-80 lead, a jumper by
Martin cut the Hood lead to one with 1:13 to go. Both teams came up
empty on their next shot attempts. Following a missed layup by
Alphonso Wright, Willison came up with the carom for Hood. But the
Blazers turned the ball over with 26 seconds left and Abercrombie
was whistled for a foul on Johnson, sending the CAC's leading
scorer to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. Johnson made the
first to knot the score at 83-83, but missed the second and
Straughn pulled down the board. Straughn put up a quick shot which
was off the mark and Johnson grabbed the rebound for Wesley. But
Johnson lost the handle at the other end, giving possession back to
Hood with nine seconds left.
The Blazers wasted little time getting the ball to Williams, the
team leader in threes, and this time the freshman knocked down the
game-winning trey off a feed from Abercrombie. After each team
burned a timeout, Kevin Johnson had a chance to tie it at the
buzzer but his heave from behind the arc rimmed out and the Blazers
escaped with the victory.
Brady was one of four Blazers in double figures with a team-high
18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and two
steals. Snoots came off the bench to net a season-high 14,
eclipsing his previous high of 13 which he scored in Hood's last
meeting with Wesley. Straughn finished with 13 points and five
assists while Abercrombie netted 10 points and a team-high six
assists. Willison grabbed a career-high 14 boards, blocked three
shots and chipped in nine points.
Martin led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and Johnson
added 22 in the losing effort.
Hood has a bye from league play this weekend but returns to the
hardwood Wednesday hosting seventh-place Stevenson University at
Mount St. Mary's University in the second game of a doubleheader
with the Hood women. All fans will be admitted free to both games
of the doubleheader, which begins at 6 p.m.
