ARLINGTON, Va.--Freshman Garrett Williams pumped in a
career-high 26 points, including five treys, as the Hood College
men's basketball team (7-15, 4-9 CAC) rallied to defeat the
Marymount University Saints (9-11, 5-7 CAC), 76-74 in overtime,
Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers, currently in eighth place in the CAC standings,
rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit to force their first
overtime game of the season and emerged victorious, completing the
season sweep of the fifth-ranked team in the conference.
After trailing 38-30 at the break, Hood was forced to play catch
up for most of the second half. Hood finally drew even (52-52) on a
free throw by Tim Abercrombie with 7:05 to go in regulation. Then
35 seconds later, a triple by Williams gave the Blazers their first
lead since early in the first half at the 6:30 mark (57-56).
Later in the half with the score knotted at 63-63, Williams
strung together Hood's next five points on a long-range bucket and
a pair of free throws to make it 68-63 Blazers with 2:11 to go in
the stanza.
Marymount wouldn't go away however and rallied to tie the score
once again at 68-68 on a putback by Mike Gray with 14 seconds
showing on the clock. Hood's J'Air Brady, who drove the lane hoping
to draw contact, was whistled for an offensive foul, giving the
ball back to the Saints with a little more than three seconds left.
Marymount turned it over however, giving the Blazers a chance at a
game-winning shot. But Brenden Straughn's heave from just inside
the three-point arc rimmed out, forcing the overtime session.
Hood got on the board first in the extra session on a pair of
free throws by Williams and never trailed in overtime. Brady's
third three-pointer of the afternoon snapped a 70-70 tie with 3:55
to play. The Saints inched closer when Tarek Ammoury and Rockwell
Moody each made 1-of-2 from the foul line to close to within 73-72
with 2:24 left.
After Ammoury came up with a block on Abercrombie's shot
attempt, the Saints had a chance to retake the lead. But Moody
turned it over and the Blazers capitalized on his miscue as Chris
Leggett knocked down a jumper from just inside the three-point arc
with 1:11 to play.
In the closing minute, Ammoury drove to the bucket and drew a
foul, setting up a potential three-point play which would have tied
the score for the second time in the overtime session. But
Marymount was whistled for a lane violation, which negated
Ammoury's free throw attempt and gave the ball back to Hood.
Clinging to a one-point lead, the Blazers tried to burn as much
clock as possible on the ensuing possession. With 12 seconds left,
MU's Ronnie Barbour was whistled for a foul on Williams, who went
to the line for two. He made the first but missed the second and
Marymount called timeout. Out of the stoppage, the aggressive
Saints went for the win as Chapman Canady launched a three, but it
was off the mark and the Blazers escaped with the hard-fought
victory.
Williams had his best game of the season, scoring a career-high
26 points on 6-of-10 from the field, 5-of-8 from distance and
9-of-10 from the foul line. Brady finished with 16 points and
buried three triples while Jeff Willison netted 10 points before
fouling out. Straughn dished seven assists and chipped in four
points while Chris Leggett contributed eight points, three blocks
and three boards.
Ammoury led the way for Marymount with 18 points.
Hood returns to action Wednesday hosting the top-ranked team in
the CAC, the Wesley College Wolverines, at 8 p.m. at Gov. Thomas
Johnson High School. Hood will honor seniors Tim Abercrombie and
Jeff Willison before the contest.
