GLENSIDE, Pa.--The Hood College softball team (1-9) dropped both
games of a nonconference doubleheader to the Arcadia University
Knights (6-2) by scores of 8-6 in the first and 11-3 (5 inn.) in
the second Thursday afternoon.
After Bridgette Ringley scored the ballgame's first run on a
Knight fielding error in the top of the first, Arcadia plated four
runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Kristen Burns, Ashley
McCarthy and Danielle Sweeney all knocked in runs for the Knights.
Arcadia plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth on
four hits and a Blazer error. But Hood had its most productive
inning of the season in the top of the fifth. Sam Smith singled
with one out and advanced to second on a groundout by Jacquie
LeMar. Ringley collected her second hit of the day, a two-out
single, to set the table for Krista Zerby. The catcher reached on
an error by Lindsey Henchinski and Smith came around to score
Hood's second run of the day.
Katherine Law then drew a walk to load the bases for leftfielder
Jen Willison. The junior from Hancock, Md., belted a grand slam,
Hood's first homerun of the season, to cut the deficit to 7-5. But
Kellie Reese retired the side in order in the sixth and Kiersten
Hughes pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Smith and Ringley both had multi-hit games for the Blazers.
Ringley took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits
with one strikeout and one walk.
In the nightcap, the Blazers used the longball once again, which
accounted for Hood's only runs of the ballgame. Zerby blasted a
three-run shot in the top of the third to stake the Blazers to a
3-0 lead. But Arcadia responded by putting up a five-spot in the
bottom of the frame, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by
Henchinski.
The Knights added two more in the fourth and four in the fifth
to secure the victory. Burns drove in three runs with a double and
Sweeney drew a bases loaded walk.
Zerby was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Ringley,
Law and LeMar also added hits for the Blazers.
Hood returns to action Monday hosting nonconference foe Wells
