SALISBURY, Md.--The Hood College softball team (3-15, 0-4 CAC)
dropped both games of a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader to
No. 21 Salisbury University (17-4, 4-0 CAC) by scores of 8-0 and
9-1, both in five innings, Sunday afternoon.
SU's Stacy Davis improved to 9-2 on the season after pitching a
two-hit shutout in the opener. Jen Willison ripped her third double
of the season in the top of the second and Jacquie LeMar singled in
the top of the third but the Blazers were unable to plate a run
against Davis.
First baseman Ali Ritter smoked a bases-clearing double to the
gap in left center to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead after one.
Brittany Lounge singled in Kelly Waskewicz in the second and Stacey
Malarkey led off the third with a solo homerun, her fifth of the
season, to make it 5-0. The Sea Gulls then tacked on three more
runs in the bottom of the fourth following three Blazer errors and
without the benefit of a basehit for the final margin.
Hood's Jamie Gardner took the loss, working 2.1 innings and and
allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits. Devon Markowitz
tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs while
surrendering only one hit.
In game two, the Sea Gulls used a six-run second inning and
limited the Blazers to just three basehits en route to completing
the sweep. Leftfielder Megan O'Gara had the big hit in the second
inning when she belted a three-run homerun, her fourth of the
season. Centerfielder Jen Cahall registered a run-scoring single
and Salisbury drew a pair of bases-loaded walks in the frame to
account for the other three runs.
Lauren Brenneman had a two-run double in the bottom of the third
for the Sea Gulls and O'Gara doubled in Cahall from first in the
bottom of the fifth for the final margin.
Bridgette Ringley's RBI double in the top of the second plated
Emalie Stroup for Hood's lone run of the ballgame. Ashley Lenhart
and Jacquie LeMar also collected basehits for the Blazers.
Kelsey Mills picked up the victory, working four shutout innings
with five strikeouts while Erika Brittingham pitched a scoreless
fifth in relief.
Ringley suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits
with two strikeouts and five walks in three innings of work.
Hood next travels to Columbia Union College Tuesday for a
nonconference twinbill beginning at 5 p.m.
