SALISBURY, Md.--The fourth-seeded Hood College softball team's
impressive run in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament came
to an end Saturday afternoon at the hands of the third-seeded York
College (Pa.) Spartans by a count of 6-0 at Salisbury University.
York starter Sam Koehl tossed a four-hit shutout and Heather
Bormann went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Spartans.
After two scoreless innings, Kelly Smith smoked a one-out triple
to the gap in right center. She came in to score the contest's
first run on a single by Bormann. The Spartans then plated four
runs on five base hits in the bottom of the fourth. Julie Norris,
Karen Carr, Smith and Bormann all knocked in runs in the frame. The
rally chased Hood starter Devon Markowitz, who was lifted for
Bridgette Ringley. Ringley retired Kristen Gray on a fly ball to
centerfield to end the inning.
The Spartans tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on
an RBI-single by Bormann. Hood right fielder Jen Willison drove a
one-out double to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. But
Krista Zerby popped up to short and Koehl fanned Jess Jrietz for
the final out of the game.
Willison went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles while Jacquie LeMar
collected Hood's only other hit of the ballgame, a two-out single
in the third.
Hood has two more nonconference doubleheaders on the docket. The
Blazers travel to McDaniel College Tuesday and Catholic University
Sunday.
