WESTMINSTER, Md.--The Hood College softball team (12-24) split a
nonconference doubleheader with the McDaniel College Green Terror
(13-18) Thursday afternoon.
Katherine Law went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lift Hood to a
3-1 win in the opener, but McDaniel's Kelly Toms pitched a two-hit
shutout and the Green Terror made a sixth-inning homerun by Erinne
Warrenfeltz stand in a 1-0 triumph.
In game one, Hood got on the board in the top of the third when
Jess Krietz led off the frame with a single. After Emalie Stroup
drew a walk, Sam Smith laid down a sacrifice to move both runners
into scoring position. Leadoff hitter Law laced a base hit to right
field which brought around both Krietz and Stroup to give the
Blazers a 2-0 lead. McDaniel got one back in the bottom of the
inning on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Wildasin.
Hood left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth. Steph
Gardner singled through the left side to start things off and
advanced to second on a sacrifice by Jen Willison. Krista Zerby and
Krietz both walked to load the bases with only one out, but relief
pitcher Christina Morley retired Stroup on strikes and Sam Smith on
a groundout to second to maintain the one-run deficit.
The Blazers were able to push across an insurance run in the top
of the seventh on an RBI-single by Bridgette Ringley, which plated
Law.
Ringley then retired the Green Terror in order in the bottom of
the seventh to clinch her seventh win of the season.
In game two, Toms had a perfect game through four innings before
Gardner singled to center to lead off the fifth. But the Blazers
were unable to plate a run against Toms, who allowed just three
base runners on the day.
Warrenfeltz's solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the sixth
proved to be the only run the Green Terror needed, which gave Toms
her first win of the year.
Gardner collected both Blazer hits in defeat. Ringley suffered
the tough-luck loss, allowing a single run on five hits and no
walks.
Hood wraps up the regular season Sunday at Catholic University
at 1 p.m.
