FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Brandy Noel and sophomore Jacquie LeMar
ripped home goals 3:15 apart late in the first half to propel the
Hood College field hockey team (1-3) to a come-from-behind 2-1 win
over visiting Goucher College (4-2) Thursday at a drizzly Thomas
Athletic Field.
Allison Metzger drove home a penalty corner off a setup by Gia
Thomas and Katie Gallagher just 10:44 into the contest to get the
Gophers on the board. It was her fourth goal of the year.
But with 6:29 remaining in the first half, the Blazers tied
things up when Noel notched Hood's first score of the season off a
feed from senior Sarah Balukoff. The goal was Noel's 14th of her
Hood career and the assist was Balukoff's first.
A few minutes later on one of Hood's nine penalty corners, LeMar
registered the first goal of her Hood career when she drilled a
shot from Noel past starting keeper Ellie Brown to give Hood a 2-1
advantage.
Looking for her second score of the afternoon in the 34th
minute, Metzger fired a shot on target but Hood junior Anne Marie
Hantman was there for the rejection and Hood took the 2-1 lead into
intermission.
Hantman was there once again at the start of the second half to
turn aside Mary Cadwellender's attempt just 1:23 into the period.
Although the Gophers outshot the Blazers, 5-1, in the second half,
Hood was able to stave off a Goucher rally and preserved their slim
lead the rest of the way.
Hood improves to 2-6 all-time against Goucher and recorded its
first win over the Gophers since 2005. Noel moved into second place
in program history in career points. She now has 33 career points
on 14 goals and five assists.
Hantman tallied four saves in the victory.
The Blazers next travel to St. Vincent College Saturday for a
4:30 p.m. nonleague tilt.
