WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-7) went
1-2 in a quad match hosted by Catholic University Saturday
afternoon.
Hood cruised past Trinity University (D.C.) in three sets (25-1,
25-8, 25-6) for its first win of 2009. The Blazers hit .467 in the
match, collecting 18 kills and 23 service aces in the decisive
victory. Megan Heidel, Leah Garland and Kristina Straub all had
four kills while Kristan Hawkins tallied three and Chelsea Weaver,
Ashley Burns and Brittany Lethbridge all chipped in one apiece.
Garland also racked up six assists and a pair of digs. Heidel aced
the Tigers six times while Burns and Straub served up five aces
each.
In the first match of the day against Marymount University, the
Blazers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win sets three and four and
force a decisive fifth set. But the Saints came out on top, taking
the fifth set, 15-6, to clinch the win.
Straub recorded Hood's triple-double of the season with 15 digs,
11 kills and 11 assists against the Saints. Hawkins put down seven
kills and had a pair of blocks while Weaver finished with a
team-high 27 digs and served up a pair of aces. Burns tallied three
kills, 12 digs and two assists while Heidel registered a
career-high 11 digs to go along with three kills.
The host Cardinals swept the Blazers, 25-14, 25-8, 25-7, to run
their win streak to seven. Hawkins notched three kills and four
digs while Burns, Lethbridge and Garland all collected a pair of
kills. Weaver once again paced the defense with 12 digs and Straub
set up five Blazer kills.
Hood is back in action Wednesday hosting Wesley College in a
Capital Athletic Conference match at 7 p.m. at Gambrill Gymnasium.
