FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-8, 0-2 CAC)
dropped a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference decision (25-19, 25-21,
25-20) to the visiting Wesley College Wolverines (4-9, 1-1 CAC)
Wednesday evening at Gambrill Gymnasium.
Wesley held the upperhand throughout in first first set but the
Blazers never trailed by more than five points. The Wolverines
closed out the set on an ace by freshman Marissa Incitti.
Hood scored the first three points of set number two on a pair
of kills by junior Kristina Straub and an ace by senior Ashley
Burns. The Blazers extended their lead to 6-1 on a Megan Heidel
kill, but the Wolverines crept back into it and eventually tied the
set at 9-9 on a kill by sophomore Jessica Taylor. The Blazers and
Wolverines exchanged points over the next several rallies but Hood
managed to take a 21-20 lead on a Wolverine hitting error. But
Wesley surged to score the final five points of the set and took a
2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.
The third set was another see-saw affair which saw the Blazers
come from behind to tie the score at 18-18 on three straight
Wolverine attacking errors. Hood was unable to overtake the
Wolverines however as sophomore Kristen Roberts served up a pair of
aces and Taylor put down a kill to clinch the match for Wesley.
Straub finished with seven kills, seven assists and seven digs
to go along with three blocks. Burns smacked five kills and chipped
in eight digs while Heidel contributed four kills and three digs.
Chelsea Weaver registered a team-high 17 digs while Leah Garland
set up eight Blazer kills and matched her season-high with 11 digs.
Additionally, Kristan Hawkins and Brittany Lethbridge collected
five kills between them.
Hood hosts its second straight match Thursday versus Lancaster
Bible College beginning at 7 p.m. at Gambrill Gymnasium.
