ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The Hood College volleyball team (1-10,
0-3 CAC) dropped a 3-0 Capital Athletic Conference decision (25-12,
25-9, 25-13) to the St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks (10-7, 2-1
CAC) Tuesday evening at the ARC Arena.
Trailing 15-8 in the first set, the Blazers used three Seahawk
miscues to cut the deficit to just four points, 15-11. But Sarah
Gregorini served eight straight points and SMC used a 10-1 run to
close out the set, 25-12.
The hosts scored the first four points of set number two but the
Blazers inched back into it on kills by senior Leah Garland and
junior Kristan Hawkins to make it 6-5. St. Mary's smacked eight
kills and outscored Hood 19-3 the rest of the set to take a 2-0
match lead.
The two teams traded points to start the third set before the
Seahawks pulled away following three Hood attack errors, giving St.
Mary's an 11-6 lead. Hood got no closer than three the rest of the
way as the Seahawks captured their third win in their last four
matches.
Garland collected a team-high five kills and three digs while
freshman Brittany Tribett set up six kills and tallied nine digs.
Junior Chelsea Weaver paced the defense with 11 digs while Hawkins,
freshman Brittany Lethbridge and junior Kristina Straub put down
one kill apiece.
Hood returns home to Gambrill Gymnasium Thursday to host
Marymount University in another CAC contest at 7 p.m.
