FREDERICK, Md.--Eleven Blazers contributed to the scoring as the
Hood College men's basketball team (12-6, 7-2 CAC) cruised to a
77-50 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over the visiting
Stevenson University Mustangs (1-17, 1-8 CAC) Saturday evening at
the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
Hood limited the Mustangs to four first half field goals and
never trailed in the contest en route to regaining a tie for first
place in the CAC with the St. Mary's College Seahawks, who suffered
a 10-point setback to the Salisbury University Sea Gulls on the
road. Both squads have identical 7-2 conference records and hold a
one-game lead over York College (Pa.) and Marymount University, who
both sit in third at 6-3.
The Blazers shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first 20
minutes and took a 32-17 lead into the locker room. Hood outscored
Stevenson 14-0 in the paint and transformed 14 Mustang turnovers
into 15 points.
The Mustangs got no closer than 12 in the second half as Hood
used a collective team effort to stifle Stevenson.
Tory Wilson led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed eight
rebounds, while Tyler Snoots (13), Brenden Straughn (12) and Justin
Stone (11) also reached double figures. Reco Siler matched his
career-high with six assists as the Blazers picked up 22 assists on
28 baskets on the night.
All 14 Blazers on the roster got into the game for significant
minutes and two players registered the first points of their Hood
careers. Tyrell Wilson went 4-for-4 from the foul line and hit
1-of-2 from the field for six points, Edward Thomas also cashed in
on 1-of-2 from the stripe. Thomas also hauled in four caroms in
just four minutes of work while Jordan Diggs dished two assists.
Additionally, Rian McHenry notched a season-high with six points.
Hood outrebounded the Mustangs, 44-34, and improved to 6-2 at
home this season.
Clifton Jones was the high man for Stevenson with 12 points,
including two three-pointers. The Mustang losing skid hit 11 as
they remain in eighth place in the CAC.
Hood wraps up its three-game homestand Wednesday hosting
Salisbury at 8 p.m. The Blazers defeated the Sea Gulls by 10 back
in December in the CAC opener for both teams. The fifth-place
Sea Gulls have won three in a row and five of their last seven
heading into Wednesday's tilt.
