FREDERICK, Md.--Freshman Justin Stone of the Hood College men's
basketball team (8-4, 3-0 CAC) scored a career-high 17 points,
including 15 in the second half and overtime, to power the Blazers
to a dramatic 61-59 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the
Wesley College Wolverines (7-5, 1-3 CAC) Wednesday evening.
With the win and an overtime loss by the York College (Pa.)
Spartans at Marymount University, the Blazers remain the only
undefeated CAC team and sit atop the standings. Hood and York
square off Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Odom Fitness Center.
Both offenses were anemic in the first half as the Wolverines
clung to an 18-15 lead at halftime. The two teams misfired on 39 of
53 attempts from the field and combined to shoot 1-of-15 from
behind the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Wesley started the second half with an 11-3 run to assume their
largest lead of the half, 29-18, at the 14:40 mark.
The Wolverines maintained the upperhand until the final 23
seconds of regulation when Reco Siler inbounded the ball to Stone
on the baseline who got the layup to go and drew a foul. Stone
banked in the free throw to regain the lead for Hood, 49-48, and
Hood called timeout.
After the Wolverines burned nine seconds trying to look for a
decent shot, Wesley called timeout with 14 seconds left. On the
inbounds play, Paul Reynolds lost the handle in traffic underneath
the basket. Hood's J'Air Brady came up with the steal and was
fouled with seven seconds left. Brady hit both clutch foul shots to
make it 51-48. But after a Hood timeout, Wesley's Rudy Thomas
delivered the dagger when his desperation three at the buzzer was
true, forcing overtime.
Hood connected on back-to-back buckets by Tory Wilson and Stone
to start the extra session. After Kevin Johnson made 1-of-2 from
the line at the other end, Stone cashed in on another layup to bump
the Blazer cushion to five with 3:24 left in OT.
On Welsey's next possession, Siler was disqualified when he
committed his fifth foul, sending Chris Douglas to the line.
Douglas hit both free throws to draw Wesley to within three. Hood's
Wilson was there to grab an offensive rebound off a miss by Stone
and drew a foul. Wilson hit the first and missed the second and
Wesley's Douglas snared the board. Kevin Johnson then hit
consecutive baskets, the second from distance, which regained the
lead for Wesley at 59-58 with 1:37 to go.
Hood misfired on its next attempt from long range and the ball
bounced over the shot clock, giving possession back to Wesley. But
Anthony Bennett picked Douglas' pocket at the other end to give
Hood life once again. With 20 ticks remaining, Straughn lobbed the
ball into Wilson who was double teamed in the post but muscled the
ball up and in to make it 60-59 Hood.
Following a Blazer timeout, Stone came up with another big play
when he deflected the ball away from Johnson and into the hands of
Brady who was fouled. Brady made 1-of-2 with four seconds left,
leaving the door slightly ajar for more late Wolverine heroics. The
Wolverines once again got the ball to Thomas but this time his
heave from halfcourt sailed high over the backboard and the Blazers
escaped with their second two-point triumph in as many games.
The Blazers remain unbeaten at the Odom Fitness Center at 5-0
and improve to 4-3 all-time against Wesley. Stone came off the
bench to lead all scorers with 17 points and eight rebounds, both
career-highs. Wilson recorded his third double-double of the season
with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Siler had a solid all-around effort
with nine points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Wesley placed three players in double figures led by Johnson's
15. Hood outebounded the Wolverines, 43-33, and earned its third
come-from-behind victory of the season after trailing at halftime.
