FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team (8-5, 3-1
CAC) suffered its first Capital Athletic Conference defeat at the
hands of the visiting York College (Pa.) Spartans (12-2, 4-1 CAC),
70-64, Saturday evening at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
York, which upended the Blazers for the fourth straight time in
the series, led for the majority of the second half and, in doing
so, dealt the Blazers their first home loss of the season.
The Spartans set the pace early but the Blazers rallied to take
their first lead, 12-10, on a triple by Justin Stone at the 8:00
minute mark. Hood maintained the upperhand until the Spartans
closed the period with a 14-3 run to claim a 28-23 edge at
halftime.
Hood came from behind once again in the second half and
leapfrogged the Spartans, 36-35, on a conventional three-point play
by Reco Siler at the 12:44 mark. But York took the lead for good on
its next possession thanks to a Matt Moley layup which ignited a
12-0 run for the guests. Jeremy Skoloda gave York its biggest lead
of the night, 47-36, midway through the half.
The Blazers closed to within two on two occasions, the last at
the 1:51 mark on a Tory Wilson free throw, but Hood misfired on its
next three possessions, allowing the Spartan lead to grow to nine
once again. York connected on 9-of-10 from the stripe in the final
52 seconds to ice the victory.
Wilson registered his fourth double-double of the season,
tallying a season-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and
three assists. Anthony Bennett came off the bench to net a
season-high 13 points while Tyler Snoots registered 11 points and
eight boards. Hood also outrebounded the Spartans, 49-35.
Kevin Whaley led all scorers with 19 points on the strength of
four of York's five long-range baskets. Nick Brady totaled 17
points, including 8-of-9 from the foul line, and picked off six
steals.
Hood continues CAC action Monday when it travels to Stevenson
University for a makeup game from Dec. 19 at 8 p.m.
