Box Score ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The St. Mary's College (Md.) Seahawks
(4-9-1, 2-3 CAC) scored a pair of goals in the final 19:40 to upend
the Hood College men's soccer team (6-6, 2-3 CAC) Wednesday
afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup.
First-year Eric Diehl got the Blazers on the board in the 33rd
minute when he pocketed his fourth goal of the season. Diehl almost
struck again 2:24 later but Paul Spranklin corralled the attempt.
The Seahawk netminder denied junior Chris Mendez as well in the
37th minute and the Blazers clung to the 1-0 edge at halftime.
Sophomore keeper Will Lane, who made a pair of saves in the
opening stanza, was tested twice more in the first 21 minutes of
the second half and kept the Seahawks out of the net each time. But
in the 71st minute, there was little Lane could do with George
Gusack's attempt, which ricocheted off the near post and caromed
into the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Lane turned aside two more Seahawk attempts before Gusack struck
again in the 84th minute. SMCM's Ted Scharfenberg fed Gusack who
chipped the ball over Lane's head and into the back of the net for
what would prove to be the game-winner. Junior J.T. Smaldore fired
Hood's only other shot of the afternoon but it sailed high of the
target.
SMCM outshot the Blazers 19-8 and attempted three corners. Lane
finished with seven saves while Spranklin posted three stops.
Hood, which slipped one spot to fifth place in the CAC
standings, returns home to host the eighth-place Stevenson
University Mustangs at 3 p.m. at Thomas Athletic Field.
