ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.--The No. 18 St. Mary's College Seahawks
(18-3, 10-2 CAC) overcame a dismal first half and outscored the
Hood College men's basketball team (14-10, 9-6 CAC) 45-24 in the
second stanza to earn a 63-48 Capital Athletic Conference win
Saturday afternoon at the ARC Arena.
The Blazers used suffocating defense in the opening half which
resulted in a 4-of-19 shooting effort by the Seahawks in the
period. Although the Blazers also shot a sub-par 26.7 percent from
the field, they did own a 24-18 halftime advantage. The Blazers
also outscored the Seahawks 12-4 in the paint.
The Seahawks turned the tables on the Blazers in the second half
however, using a 20-3 run over a span of 7:41 to transform a
seven-point deficit into a 10-point lead, 47-37, with 6:35
remaining in regulation. From there, the Blazers got no closer than
eight the rest of the way.
Tyler Snoots connected on 4-of-9 from the field for 10 points
while Brenden Straughn and Tory Wilson added nine points and seven
rebounds apiece.
Camontae Griffin led all scorers with 23 points, including 18 in
the second half, while Alex Franz finished with 19 points and six
assists for the victors.
The Blazers, who now sit in fifth place in the CAC standings,
close out the regular season Saturday when they host the
sixth-place Marymount University Saints at 6 p.m. at the Odom
Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
