FREDERICK, Md.--Junior Tyler Snoots recorded his fifth career
double-double with 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds and
blocked four shots to lead the Hood College men's basketball team
(15-10, 10-6 CAC) to a 61-50 Capital Athletic Conference victory
over the Marymount University Saints (14-11, 9-7 CAC) Saturday
evening at the Odom Fitness Center at Fort Detrick.
The Blazers finished as the No. 4 seed in the CAC standings and
will host fifth-seeded Marymount once again on Tuesday at the Odom
Fitness Center at 7 p.m. in a first round playoff game.
The Blazers and Saints traded buckets for most of the opening
stanza before Hood took the lead for good on a jumper by Snoots at
the 4:29 mark which snapped a 17-17 tie. Hood outscored Marymount
13-4 in the closing minutes of the period and led 30-21 at
intermission.
Hood tightened up its defense and limited the Saints to just two
field goals over the first 9:27 of the second half while stretching
its lead to as many as 16 (42-26) when Anthony Bennett buried his
lone three-pointer of the contest with 11:14 to go. The Blazers
maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way. A Bryan DeBruin
triple drew the Saints to within eight in the final minute, but the
Blazers kept Marymount at bay to complete the regular season sweep.
Brenden Straughn led all scorers with 17 points, including three
long-range baskets, to go along with five assists and a pair of
steals. Tory Wilson fouled out with 13 points and seven boards.
Hood recognized seniors J'Air Brady, Anthony Bennett and Joe
Tressler before the contest. Brady hit a pair of free throws and
grabbed three rebounds, while Bennett chipped in three points and a
rebound and Tressler earned his first career start and dished an
assist.
Marymount was led by DeBruin's 11 points off the bench.
The Blazers and Saints met in a 2008 CAC tournament first round
game at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School. The Saints, then the No. 6
seed, upended the third-seeded Blazers, 80-77, to advance to the
semifinals.
