KISSIMMEE, Fla.--The Hood College softball team (5-3) improved
to 5-1 on its spring break trip to Kissimmee, Fla., at the Rebel
Spring Games after ousting Ashford University, 5-1, and
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 4-3, Wednesday.
Hood struck quickly against the Saints with three runs in the
top of the first inning. Kelly Gafner and Bridgette Ringley drove
in runs in the frame. After a scoreless second inning, Brittni
Jones singled in Kandie Glenn who led off the inning with a single
to extend the Blazer lead to 4-0. After Ashford tacked on a single
run in the fifth, Ringley drew a bases loaded walk in the top of
the seventh to make it 5-1. Jordan Wolford tossed a complete-game
two-hitter for the victory and struck out two Saint batters along
the way.
Then in the second game against MCLA, the Trailblazers jumped on
top early with a pair of runs in the top of the first. But in the
bottom half of the inning, Hood's Casey Dunn ripped a two-out
double and came around to score on Wolford's RBI base hit to cut
the deficit in half. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Glenn drew a
lead-off walk and after Erin McNally bunted her over to second,
Glenn came around to score on an overthrow. Wolford then laced
another RBI single to score Jones and Dunn crossed the plate with
Hood's fourth run of the game on another defensive miscue by the
Trailblazers. MCLA closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the seventh,
but Ringley closed the door to preserve the win for Hood.
The Blazers have an off-day Thursday before resuming play Friday
with single games against Kean University and Rowan University.
