FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College softball team (7-9, 2-2 CAC)
dropped both games of a Capital Athletic Conference twinbill to the
No. 17 Salisbury University Sea Gulls (19-2, 6-0 CAC) Sunday by
scores of 10-0 in five innings and 4-2.
The Sea Gulls broke open a close game in the top of the fifth
inning with a seven-run outburst. Salisbury batted around as Kelly
Waskewicz and Michelle Gravdahl both jacked two-run homeruns in the
frame.
Hood's Casey Dunn was 2-for-3 in the opener while Kandie Glenn
and Jordan Wolford also collected basehits for the Blazers. SU's
Kelly Leary remained perfect in the circle with a five-inning
shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, Lauren Brenneman doubled in Waskewicz to stake
the visitors to an early lead. But the Blazers struck right back in
the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Erin McNally and
Brittini Jones were credited with run-scoring singles in the
inning.
Kristin Lord tripled to lead off the second inning and came
around to score on a Blazer fielding error. The score remained tied
for the next four innings before the Sea Gulls managed to push
across two runs in the top of the seventh on three Blazer defensive
miscues. Erika Brittingham retired the side in order in the bottom
of the seventh to complete the sweep for SU and extend the Sea
Gulls win streak to 19 in a row.
Dunn had another fine effort at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a
run scored from the leadoff spot. During Hood's four-game
homestand, she was 10-for-14 (.714) with three extra-base hits, six
runs and four RBI. Bridgette Ringley's record in the circle dipped
to 3-4 with the loss, though she did pick up a pair of strikeouts
and contained the potent Sea Gull offense to just four runs.
Hood continues CAC action Wednesday when it hosts York College
(Pa.) for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
